Our EcoCAR

West Virginia University’s EcoCAR will be a Two-Mode Electrically Variable Transmission Vehicle. The vehicle’s powertrain system will include a GM two-mode transmission, 1.3L turbo diesel engine fueled with a B20 biodiesel blend, and a lithium ion energy storage system comprised of four A123 25S2P modules connected in series.

This architecture will provide for the best performance in all measured categories, as well as the best package for the WVU team to integrate.

The WVU team believes its vehicle design can achieve 35 mpg, which is significantly higher than the stock vehicle’s 28.6 mpg. The well-to-wheel green house gas emissions will also be reduced from 246 g/km to 150 g/km. Power will not be sacrificed either; actual 0-60 time and 50-70 time will both be lowered with the team’s design by 2.6 seconds.
